Lessons in the Alexander Technique
Anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of the way their body moves, breathes, and functions should take lessons in the Alexander Technique. An individual lesson, one-on-one with a certified teacher is recommended.
In a typical lesson, a teacher will work with a student using both a chair and a table as a means. The two most basic functioning positions are sitting and standing, so the teacher works with the student on gaining ease of movement in these positions. The teacher uses subtle guidance with skilled hands to help achieve this ease of movement. Unlike some other body work methods, the Alexander Technique does require participation from students, in the form of thinking and awareness. A teacher works on a completely individualized basis, and each student’s specific needs are addressed. Although there is nothing specifically required for a student to bring to a lesson, students should wear clothing that is not overly restrictive and allows them to move freely.
Although there is not a set number of lessons a pupil should take, at least a 10-lesson course is recommended for best results. Weekly or bi-monthly lesson times are offered. A lesson typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.
